European Accessibility Act (EAA) 2025

Starting June 28, 2025, many e-commerce businesses will be required to ensure their digital services are accessible to everyone, in compliance with the EU's new accessibility directive, the European Accessibility Act (EAA). The directive mandates that digital services must be usable by all individuals, regardless of ability, including users with impaired vision, hearing, or cognitive functions. However, micro-enterprises — businesses with fewer than 10 employees or annual revenue under 2 million euros — are exempt from these requirements.

Product Safety Regulation (GPSR)

Starting December 13, 2024, new product safety regulations will come into effect within the EU/EEA under the Product Safety Regulation (GPSR). The regulation applies to all goods not covered by other harmonized EU legislation, such as furniture, clothing, and children’s products.

Key changes:

  • E-commerce and technology: Increased focus on product safety in online sales, including requirements for traceability and safety information on online platforms.
  • Economic actors: Companies must have internal processes for product safety, and products can only be sold if a responsible actor is established within the EU.
  • Traceability: Products must be labeled with the manufacturer's information and be identifiable to consumers.
  • Consumer rights: In case of recalls, consumers must be offered repair, replacement, or a refund. There must also be options for lodging complaints.
  • Accidents: Companies must report product-related accidents to the authorities.

Online marketplaces must ensure that sellers provide necessary information and take action on dangerous products. Additionally, clear labeling and safety information are required for distance selling.
